New Beginnings

AndrewbeDRIVEN, beNOBLE

The new school year kicked off for my kids a few weeks ago but the complaining every morning is still fresh in my ears after dropping them off. Why do we need to go? It’s boring! I don’t want to sit at a desk all day. Can’t I stay home just today?

Starting a new school year is hard. Heck, starting anything new is hard. It took me 15 minutes just to write the first few lines of this blog. I’m probably misquoting my high school physics teacher but, “Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, while objects at rest tend to stay at rest.” Meaning it’s hard to break the inertia in the physical world. I have found this to be true mentally as well.

I have been more consistent in my workouts this year than at any time (save high school). My brother-in-law tweaked his back about 3 weeks ago so we took some time off to heal up. Today was the first leg day since then and I wanted to quit only a few sets in. Three weeks off felt like an eternity and my legs felt like they were in quicksand the entire workout. Getting back to the grind is hard to do. I’ll probably be limping around the house for a few days. After catching our breath, we both agreed it felt good to get a hard day under our belt and be back at it.

I find that new beginnings have plenty of correlation to our spiritual life as well. Are you just starting your faith journey or maybe caught in a season that needs a refresh? Have there been habits or actions that you want to change or start doing? There is no time like the present to start.

Jesus has an awesome habit of making the old new again. In Corinthians 5:17 he says “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old is gone, the new is here”. We can leave the past behind and start new with him. Referring to the new heaven and new earth he said “Behold I make all things new”. (Revelation 21:5) Death, pain, sorrow, leg days, and returning to school will be no more. Jesus takes it all away and gives us rest in him. Pretty amazing.
